Fifth Grade January Newsletter

Language Arts

The students have started to work with their Literature Circle groups.  They are enjoying the process and are to having intelligent discussions that are both thought provoking and insightful.   In grammar, we will begin to focus on adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, and conjunctions.   The fables done by the students were well written.  We will be learning the steps of writing a research report and the various methods of presenting material.

Math

The classes will continue to work on the chapter which covers division with both single and double-digit divisors and remainders. We will also continue working with various problem solving strategies. Back in October at Back to School night, I spoke about the importance of the 5th grade mastering the basic facts to help their success in math.  In order to help with this process, I have asked that all students take a basic facts quiz once a week. The facts and day of the test will be announced each week. Students will be quizzed on past facts as well, so they should continue to practice all facts, not just those assigned. Retention of the basic facts is vital to your child’s math success!

Social Studies

Our next unit of study leads us into the English Colonies and how each colony was settled, got its name, and important early colonists of the time period.  We will be looking at the various colonies and what role each of them played in the survival of the English settlements.   This will lead us into the Revolutionary War.   The students will also explore many important historical documents such as the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, etc.  Additionally, we will be discussing the upcoming inauguration and the transition of government.

Science

The countdown has begun and we have blasted off! The next unit of study will cover the Earth, Moon, and beyond. The students will conduct an investigation to learn how earth and the moon compare, learn about what else is in the solar system, and the various ways people have explored the solar system. As an extension of this unit the students will be visiting the Discovery Museum for more hands on experiences centered on this topic.
